Both the economic literature and government acknowledge that innovation is one of the most important determinants of economic development, competition, and overall welfare. Innovation efforts are therefore systematically monitored within the European Union, using a survey that follows the international guidelines as published in the Oslo Manual (OECD/Eurostat, 2018). The Community Innovation Survey (CIS) is commissioned by the European Commission (in particular Eurostat) and has been carried out in Flanders on a yearly basis between 1993 and 2005, and since 2005 on a biannual basis.
This chapter presents the main results of CIS2023, which has been carried out in 2023 by the Centre for R&D Monitoring (ECOOM). An extensive overview of results, methodology, NACE sectors used, definition of the size classes, and respondents’ profile, can be found in the CIS report 2023 (note: available in Dutch only).
